Balochistan 2025: Disappearances and Killings Expose State Brutality

A prominent human rights organisation has reported a disturbing rise in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan since the beginning of 2025. According to Paank, the Human Rights Department of the Baloch National Movement, at least 785 individuals have been forcibly disappeared and 121 extrajudicially killed by Pakistani security forces and affiliated “state-backed death squads.”

The organisation stated that the daily average has reached four enforced disappearances and one killing, marking a significant escalation in human rights violations in the region. Victims include students, journalists, and peaceful protesters, many of whom were abducted from major cities such as Karachi and Islamabad.

“These actions were carried out by security forces and state-backed death squads operating with complete impunity,” Paank said in its statement.

The report follows the recent killing of Dil Jan Baloch, who was allegedly abducted on July 22 from the Kech district and was later confirmed dead on August 2. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has attributed his death to a state-backed death squad. Similarly, Inayat Khair Mohammad, forcibly disappeared in December 2024, was reportedly killed by the same entities on August 3, according to the Human Rights Council of Balochistan (HRCB).

The HRCB emphasised that these so-called “death squads,” widely believed to act as proxies for the state, continue to operate with impunity and are part of a broader strategy to silence dissent and bypass judicial oversight.

“These practices are in direct violation of Pakistan’s binding international human rights obligations,” the HRCB stated, specifically referencing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)—particularly the rights to life, liberty, and protection from arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance.

Human rights groups have repeatedly urged the international community to initiate independent investigations and establish accountability mechanisms to address the ongoing crisis and prevent further abuses in Balochistan.
