A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of a flat in the Gulshan area, owned by Saima Wazed Putul, the daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ruling, issued on Tuesday, follows an appeal by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh, which raised concerns that Wazed Putul was attempting to transfer or dispose of the property, potentially undermining the ongoing investigation. The flat, valued at 5.7 million Bangladeshi Taka, is now subject to a court-appointed receiver.
The ACC’s petition highlights the importance of safeguarding the immovable asset until the case is resolved, emphasizing that any attempt to transfer the property could interfere with the legal process. This latest development comes amidst a broader wave of legal actions involving Wazed Putul and her family, including arrest warrants issued by the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, which came into power in August of last year.
In addition to the property seizure, the same court has directed authorities to initiate steps for the issuance of an arrest warrant through Interpol for Wazed Putul. This is linked to a corruption case involving the allocation of a plot in Purbachal. Local reports indicate that the Bangladesh Police Headquarters has formally requested Interpol to issue a ‘red notice’ against Wazed Putul and several other individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with charges related to plotting the overthrow of the Yunus-led interim government. This request is part of a broader investigation into allegations of conspiracy, civil unrest, and an attempt to unseat the transitional administration.
Assistant Inspector General (Media) Enamul Haque Sagor confirmed that the request for a ‘red notice’ is being processed, which would allow global law enforcement agencies to locate and detain the individuals involved pending potential extradition. Interpol’s role in tracing fugitives internationally is crucial, with authorities relying on its network to pinpoint the whereabouts of absconding suspects.
These developments follow an earlier appeal made by the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal in November of last year, urging the police to seek Interpol’s assistance for Hasina’s arrest. Despite these legal challenges, Sheikh Hasina has publicly criticized the Yunus-led interim government, accusing it of turning the nation into a “hub of terrorism” and lawlessness.
