Hyderabad-born model Bhavitha Mandava has become an overnight global sensation after creating history in the world of high fashion. The 25-year-old captured international attention in New York City as she opened Chanel’s Métiers d’Art 2026 show — becoming the first-ever Indian model to lead a Chanel runway.
But beyond the milestone, it was a heartwarming viral video that truly stole the internet’s attention. The clip, shared by Bhavitha on Instagram, shows her mother cheering loudly from the audience and calling out her name, while her father watches with visible pride. The emotional moment resonated deeply with viewers across the world, quickly going viral. Celebrities such as Pooja Hegde, Rhea Kapoor, and Aditi Rao Hydari left heartfelt reactions on the post.
In her caption, Bhavitha wrote: “Can’t put into words how much this means to me.” She thanked Chanel and creative director Matthieu Blazy for the opportunity.
From Hyderabad to Haute Couture
In a behind-the-scenes interview with fashion creator Dylan Kelly, Bhavitha revealed her unconventional entry into modelling. She was scouted on Atlantic Avenue by an agency representative — and initially declined. But when she learned modelling could help her pay off student debt, she reconsidered.
Her very first assignment was for Bottega Veneta, though she didn’t realise its significance until her classmates reacted in disbelief. Coming from a middle-class background, Bhavitha said the world of couture felt distant until that moment.
A master’s graduate from NYU, she eventually found herself at a crossroads: choose a stable tech career or pursue modelling full-time. With her parents’ support and an exclusive offer from Chanel, she chose the latter.
“The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward,” she said.
Matthieu Blazy’s Simple Advice
Ahead of her historic runway appearance, creative director Matthieu Blazy gave her one piece of advice: “Have fun.”
Bhavitha said this helped her stay calm and present during the landmark moment.
A Milestone for Indian Representation
Bhavitha’s achievement marks a powerful moment for diversity in global fashion. She credited casting director Anita Bitton for championing representation and opening doors for new faces.
The response, she said, has been overwhelming:
“Reading messages from people saying this feels like a personal win, or that the representation has healed them — it’s surreal. This is just the beginning.”
