The successful landing of the first aircraft at Bhogapuram International Airport near Visakhapatnam marks a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s infrastructure development. However, the achievement has quickly turned into a political flashpoint, with both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) staking claim to the project’s progress and completion.
Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy asserted that crucial approvals were secured during his tenure and that nearly ₹960 crore was spent on land acquisition and rehabilitation, which, according to him, laid a strong foundation for the airport’s development. The TDP has countered these claims, stating that the Bhogapuram airport was originally conceptualised in 2015 under former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The party maintains that central clearances, land acquisition, and initial construction activities were largely completed before the change in government.
The TDP further alleged that the project witnessed limited progress for several years and gained real momentum only after the coalition government returned to power.
Amid the political back-and-forth, sources point to a decisive administrative push as a key factor behind the airport’s rapid completion. Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, who represents the North Andhra region, is said to have taken a personal interest in the project. He reportedly monitored progress closely and ensured round-the-clock work in three shifts over the past year. This focused approach helped fast-track pending works and final fine-tuning, enabling Bhogapuram International Airport to reach this milestone in record time.
