Box Office Pressure Mounts on Balakrishna as Peers Race Ahead

Last year, senior star Venkatesh Daggubati delivered a massive box office success with Sankranthiki Vastunnam, which went on to gross around ₹260 crores worldwide. This year, Megastar Chiranjeevi has taken things a step further, with Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu crossing the ₹300-crore mark globally. These back-to-back successes by senior actors have significantly raised the bar, inevitably putting pressure on their contemporaries in Tollywood.

Among those feeling the heat are Nagarjuna Akkineni and Nandamuri Balakrishna. While Nagarjuna has been making conscious efforts to stay relevant in the pan-India space by aligning himself with large-scale projects like Kubera and Coolie, Balakrishna appears to be lagging behind in this race. Fondly called Balayya by his fans, the senior star was expected to make a strong pan-India statement with Akhanda 2. However, the film failed to live up to expectations, with the North Indian audience largely rejecting it despite aggressive promotions and the proven combination of Balakrishna and director Boyapati Srinu.

With expectations mounting, the pressure is now firmly on Balakrishna to deliver a big-scale commercial success. His upcoming project with director Gopichand Malineni is seen as a crucial film in this regard. Reports suggest that the director is currently reworking the script to ensure the film opens to phenomenal numbers and achieves mammoth box office collections. Even Balakrishna’s loyal fan base is hoping that their favourite star will quickly turn the tide and reassert his dominance at the box office with a blockbuster success.
