Breaking: AP cabinet approves ‘Disha Bill’

In what could be a historic and remarkable feat, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved the bill that is proposed to take serious action in rape and crime incidents against women.

The new bill suggests that the culprits in rape incidents will get death sentence if proven and such cases should be brought to justice in 21 days. The bill has been named as ‘AP Disha Act’ after the brutal rape and murder of Disha in Hyderabad outskirts.

The Indian Penal Code of section 354 is amended by the cabinet and a new clause 354-E is added to this section. This new law enables the police to investigate the rape cases in just seven days and submit the report to a FasTrack court. The trails will long for two weeks and if the crime is proved, the culprits will directly get death penalty.

The new bill also has the stuff of social media abuse against women. The first timers of such incidents would get two years jail and if repeated, it would be four years of imprisonment. Also people who sexually assault minors will serve five to seven years of jail. As per the POSCO Act sexual offenders would get only three years. The AP government has recommended to increase the punishment and cabinet approved it.

Overall, Andhra Pradesh is the first state in the country to tighten the laws to punish the crooks to decrease the crime ratio on women. This is a welcome move and should be appreciated.
