BRS–TRS Name Change Debate Resurfaces in Telangana Politics

The debate over renaming the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) back to its original identity, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), has once again gained momentum in Telangana politics, triggering widespread discussion.

The latest buzz follows reports that Telangana Jagruthi president and former BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha has applied to the Election Commission of India for the registration of the TRS name. While it is being speculated that the move is aimed at cornering the BRS leadership, sources suggest she may not intend to actively use it.

Adding further fuel to the discussion, BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao recently hinted that the party could consider reverting to its original name, citing growing demand from grassroots leaders and cadre to restore the TRS identity. Speaking to the media in Mancherial, he acknowledged that a proposal is under consideration and admitted that changing the name to BRS ahead of the last Assembly elections may not have worked in the party’s favour.

“Yes, it was a mistake to change the name of TRS into BRS before the last Assembly elections. We lost the Telangana identity with that decision. Now there is a demand to return to the original name. The final decision will be taken by party president K. Chandrashekar Rao,” KTR stated.

Originally formed during the Telangana statehood movement as TRS, the party was later rebranded as BRS with a national expansion vision. However, political observers believe the move failed to deliver results, as the party suffered setbacks in both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, discussions are now intensifying within political circles about whether the party will revert to TRS or opt for a new name with a Telangana focus ahead of the next elections. Analysts, however, argue that returning to the old name could be seen as a political setback and may be interpreted as an attempt to revive Telangana sentiment for electoral gains.
