Amid growing controversy surrounding the Congress government’s “Hydra” task force in Telangana, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Karthik Reddy has announced plans to establish a counter-task force named “Cobra” if the party returns to power. The announcement was made during a political gathering held at Telangana Bhavan on Sunday, which was attended by BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and several leaders who recently joined the party.
Hydra, a special task force launched under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s Congress government, was formed to protect lakes, ponds, and nalas in Hyderabad. Since its inception, the unit has taken control of several properties, demolished unauthorized constructions, and launched high-profile crackdowns, drawing mixed reactions from the public and political spectrum.
Criticizing Hydra’s operations, Karthik Reddy alleged that the task force has disproportionately targeted the properties of poor families and opposition leaders, while overlooking illegal constructions linked to Congress figures. He cited a recent incident in Mailardevpally, where homes belonging to economically disadvantaged families were demolished under the pretext of road expansion, whereas nearby illegal structures allegedly associated with a Congress MLA remained untouched.
“Hydra is being misused as a political tool by the ruling Congress to facilitate land grabs under the guise of asset protection,” said Reddy. “Once BRS returns to power, we will launch Cobra — a task force committed to protecting public lands and taking strict action against encroachments, regardless of political affiliation.”
Reddy asserted that the BRS has comprehensive data on illegal land occupation during the Congress regime and pledged to release this information and initiate action in due course. Despite his composed demeanor throughout the address, Reddy’s statements strongly criticized Hydra’s functioning and suggested clear intentions for institutional countermeasures through Cobra.
The remarks, made in the presence of senior BRS leader KTR, signal a sharpening political discourse ahead of the next state elections, as parties position themselves on issues of land governance, urban planning, and administrative accountability.
