Phnom Penh, Jan 2 (IANS) – In Cambodia, 87% of the population, which totals 17 million, now has access to basic drinking water, while 21% benefit from safely managed drinking water, according to a government official on Thursday.

Chreay Pom, Director General of Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Rural Development, shared these figures during a meeting on clean water and sanitation in rural areas.

“For sanitation, we aim to have around 92% of the population with access to basic sanitation by 2024, while 51% will have access to safely managed sanitation,” he said.

The ministry also reported that 14 out of the country’s 25 provinces have been recognized as Open Defecation-Free.

Chhay Rithisen, Minister of Rural Development, stated that the government plans to declare seven more provinces free from open defecation by the end of 2025.

Looking ahead, the government has set an ambitious goal to ensure that by 2030, all citizens will have access to clean water and 100% sanitation, contributing to a sustainable environment across the nation.
