Back in 2022, OpenAI sparked an AI revolution with the launch of ChatGPT, bringing generative AI into everyday conversations. After years of success, however, ChatGPT is now facing a growing user backlash, with the “Cancel ChatGPT” movement gaining momentum across social media.
The controversy erupted after OpenAI struck a deal with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to provide AI models for military use. Previously, rival AI company Anthropic had refused to partner with the DoD, citing concerns over AI reliability for military applications. The OpenAI deal has raised fears about fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance.
The backlash has intensified as users voice their disapproval on platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). Many have started unsubscribing from paid ChatGPT plans and sharing screenshots of their cancellations online. One Reddit user commented, “We’re all in the death business now that OpenAI has succumbed to the corrupt Department of War.” Others have encouraged users to switch to Anthropic’s Claude AI for a safer and more privacy-focused alternative.
Critics argue that OpenAI proactively changed its policies to allow military applications. One Reddit user wrote, “They removed the language banning military applications because they wanted to, and because Sam Altman is a dirtbag. This was a calculated business decision to chase government money at the expense of everything they promised when they asked for your trust and your subscription.”
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude AI has reportedly surged in popularity amid the controversy. Many former ChatGPT users have migrated to Claude, which emphasizes privacy-focused policies and strict safety guardrails. The app recently ranked No. 1 in productivity on Apple’s App Store, highlighting its growing appeal among users seeking safer AI alternatives.
