The tragic Karur stampede, which occurred in September last year during actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay’s maiden political rally, continues to cast a long shadow over his political journey. The unfortunate incident resulted in the death of 41 supporters, sending shockwaves across Tamil Nadu and the country.

According to the latest reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now summoned Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Vijay for questioning in connection with the case. The move comes amid allegations that security norms and safety guidelines were allegedly flouted while organising the massive public rally, leading to the deadly stampede.

As per the notice issued by the CBI, Vijay has been directed to appear for questioning at the agency’s New Delhi headquarters on January 12th. Notably, this development comes at a crucial time for the star, as he is awaiting the release of his farewell film Jana Nayagan, which is scheduled to hit theatres on January 9th.

Earlier, on October 13th last year, the Supreme Court, while hearing a plea filed by the TVK party, ordered a CBI probe into the tragedy to ensure a fair and impartial investigation. The apex court also constituted a three-member committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, to monitor and review the progress of the inquiry.

So far, the CBI has questioned several TVK party officials in connection with the case. With Vijay now receiving the summons, the investigation is expected to enter a crucial and serious phase in the coming days.
