Chalameshwar meets Jagan: What’s up?

The sudden meeting of former Supreme Court judge Justice Jasti Chalameshwar with YSR Congress party president and chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy in Hyderabad raised many an eyebrow.

Chalameshwar was accompanied by Andhra Pradesh official languages commission chairman Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad and Narsaraopet MP Lavu Krishna Devarayalu.

According to sources, Jagan and Chalameshwar discussed the latest developments in the state, including the three capitals plan and also abolition of legislative council. Apparently, Jagan had sought the advice of Chalameshwar in overcoming the legal hurdles in the three capitals issue.

But what interested the political circles is the timing of Chalameshwar’s visit to Jagan. Though it is considered to be a courtesy call by the retired Supreme Court judge, it has led to various speculations in the political and media circles.

It is not a coincidence that Chalameshwar was accompanied by the leaders from his own community when he met Jagan.

While Yarlagadda and Krishna Devarayalu are now part of the YSRC, Chalameshwar, too, is a hardcore opponent of TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, though he is distantly related to N T Rama Rao family.

So, definitely, the strategy to counter Naidu on Amaravati issue and the repercussions of the agitation by his caste groups in shifting the capital from Amaravati to Visakhapatnam could have come up for discussion.

It is also not exactly known whether Chalameshwar has any political ambitions. However, he made it clear several times in the past that he would keep away from politics. But in case Jagan needs any expert advice on legal matters, he might be looking towards Chalameshwar.
