Chennai: A 32-year old airhostess killed herself at her home at the Air India quarters in Meenambakkam Sunday evening. According to the police, no suicide note was found in the house, but parents allege that long hours and hectic work schedules led to the suicide. The deceased, Manpreet Pal, 32, had been working as an airhostess with Air India since 2007 and had met and married her co-worker, Anup Nair, 35, in 2012. Nair works as a technician with Air India and the couple has a two- year- old daughter.

Manpreet’s parents live close by, in Teacher’s Colony, which is where the couple would leave their child everyday when they went off to work. It was when Nair returned home with their daughter after picking her up from his in-laws’ house Sunday night when he found Manpreet hanging from the ceiling in their bedroom.

As on any regular work day, Nair had left at 2pm, dropping his daughter at his in-laws’ house while his wife was to report at 4.15 pm and board the Chennai-Muscat flight. When he returned to pick up his daughter, he found that his father-in law had injured himself, falling off his bike. After getting himself treated at a private hospital, Manpreet’s father Guru Pal Singh told Nair not to inform Manpreet of the incident as she was presumed to be at work.

When Nair returned home at 10 pm, he found the front door had been left ajar. Surprised, he looked for his wife and found the bedroom door locked. He called up her office to find out if she had left early, but Air India officials informed him that Manpreet had never turned up for duty and she had been absent from duty. Nair then broke open the door and found Manpreet had hanged herself inside the bedroom. The neighbours, hoping she was still alive, rushed her to the hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. The police did not find any suicide note to determine the reason behind Manpreet’s extreme step.

Manpreet’s parents said there no personal matters between husband and wife could have led to the suicide as the couple was very happy together. “We are Punjabi and our son-in law’s family hails from Kerala but we did not have any problem accepting their relationship. In their three years of marriage there was not a single fight,” said Guru Pal Singh. Singh said that his daughter would regularly complain about her hectic work schedule.
