Chiranjeevi Wins Court Order Against Unauthorized Deepfake Content

Celebrities are increasingly concerned about the severe financial and reputational damage caused by deepfake and AI-manipulated photos and videos. In today’s digital era, it is often impossible to predict when or how such content will appear. AI-generated fake photos and videos can distort the original personality, making it difficult for the general public to distinguish between real and manipulated content. Many websites, including commercial platforms, have been misusing celebrity images, voices, and videos, sometimes to the point of serious exploitation. Some even aim to tarnish celebrities’ reputations for personal gain.

Recently, Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai approached the Delhi High Court, which granted relief by ordering the removal of deepfake images, videos, and AI-generated content from 30–40 websites. Following this, Tollywood superstar Nagarjuna also sought legal protection, and the court issued a favorable ruling, providing him relief from such digital misuse.

Now, Megastar Chiranjeevi has filed a petition in the Hyderabad City Civil Court, which has issued a temporary injunction. The court has ruled that Chiranjeevi’s name, image, voice, or likeness cannot be used without authorization on digital platforms, including AI-generated content and Metaverse formats. The order, issued in September, applies to e-commerce stores, YouTube channels, digital media platforms, and over 30 online entities.

The petition highlighted that several platforms were using Chiranjeevi’s persona without permission for commercial or personal gain, including promoting products under his name, which could cause damage to him and his family. The court clarified that unauthorized use of Chiranjeevi’s image or AI-generated content for commercial purposes, political propaganda, or offensive material will be treated as a criminal offense. The ruling emphasizes that damages from such misuse are irreparable.

The court has prohibited the use of Chiranjeevi’s identity across all physical, electronic, or AI-based media. The next hearing is scheduled for October 27, and Chiranjeevi’s legal team is seeking permanent protection of his personality rights across digital platforms.
