Chiranjeevi’s Absence from Amaravati Event Sparks Political Buzz

The Andhra Pradesh government recently hosted a grand re-launch of the Amaravati capital project, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation stone. Promoted as a landmark event, the ceremony witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Prime Minister Modi. However, the notable absence of megastar Chiranjeevi became a focal point of discussion.

Though the state government had reportedly invited Chiranjeevi as a special guest—given his previous warm ties with PM Modi—he did not attend, prompting speculation. Sources suggest that the Prime Minister’s Office had even requested the state to include Chiranjeevi’s name among the key dignitaries for the day.

Chiranjeevi’s recent political and social engagements added further weight to the speculation. During the swearing-in of Naidu and Pawan Kalyan, the actor-turned-politician offered respectful tributes. He also made high-profile appearances in Delhi and was invited to the Alluri Sitarama Raju centenary celebrations, where he received a warm welcome in the presence of Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Moreover, Chiranjeevi has recently voiced praise for Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and publicly extended his support to his brother, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan—indicating a visible shift in political alignment.

Despite all these connections, Chiranjeevi remained absent from the Amaravati event and did not comment publicly, raising eyebrows. While some sources claimed he was in Mumbai attending the WAVES conference, which was also graced by PM Modi, it is still unclear whether the two met there.

Others speculate that Chiranjeevi may have intentionally skipped the event to avoid political embarrassment, given his past support for the YSRCP government and Jagan Mohan Reddy’s decentralization policy. In 2019, Chiranjeevi had backed the three-capital proposal, stating:

“It’s time we welcomed the establishment of an executive capital in Visakhapatnam, a legislative capital in Amaravati, and a judicial capital in Kurnool.”

He had also emphasized that concentrating administration in one region led to regional disparities.

“Post-1956, development has been highly lopsided. Focusing only on Amaravati again would be unfair to future generations,” he had warned.

Given his prior criticism of Amaravati as a singular capital, attending the re-launch may have appeared contradictory, and likely influenced his decision to stay away from the politically charged event.
