In the Telugu film industry, it’s not uncommon for senior actresses to take a break following marriage and later return to the silver screen. While such comebacks are often celebrated and eagerly anticipated, not all of them result in success. This year, three popular actresses—Anshu, Laya, and Genelia—made their return to Telugu cinema after extended hiatuses. Unfortunately, each of their comeback projects failed to make a mark at the box office.
Anshu, best remembered for her roles in Manmadhudu and Raghavendra, made her comeback nearly two decades later with Mazaka, starring Sundeep Kishan. Despite the buzz surrounding her return, the film failed to resonate with audiences and ended up as a commercial failure.
Laya, a familiar face from the early 2000s, returned to the big screen with Thammudu, featuring Nithiin in the lead. Though she played a significant role, the film did not meet expectations and was declared a major disappointment upon release.
Genelia, who was once one of the most sought-after actresses in the Telugu film industry, made her much-awaited comeback after a 13-year break with the film Junior. Married to actor Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia’s return generated substantial interest. However, the film received negative reviews for its outdated storyline and weak screenplay, ultimately failing to impress both critics and audiences.
These examples highlight the unpredictable nature of film comebacks, especially in an industry where audience preferences evolve rapidly. While nostalgia can create initial excitement, sustained success depends on strong scripts, engaging storytelling, and the right opportunities.
