The recently released film Jinn, featuring Mukesh Rao and launched on May 30, has been overshadowed by a public dispute involving its director T. R. Bala and actor-director S. J. Suryah. The controversy stems from their collaboration on the film’s story, which reportedly lasted nearly two years.
Director Bala revealed that he and Suryah engaged in multiple discussions and revisions during the story development phase. However, following Suryah’s recent success in other projects, his approach allegedly changed. At a critical meeting intended to initiate filming, Suryah questioned Bala’s cinematic understanding and expressed doubts about his suitability to helm the project. Feeling disrespected and sidelined, Bala chose to proceed by producing and directing the film independently.
In response, Suryah released a screenshot of their private communications, asserting that while he appreciated the story, he never approved the screenplay or dialogues. He further stated his inability to commit to the project and advised Bala to seek another lead actor.
Adding complexity to the situation, actor R. S. Karthik accused Bala of unethical practices involving a producer in a separate film venture. This allegation fueled further debate on social media, where many voices sided with Suryah. Supporters described him as a supportive and liberal figure in the industry who only withdraws support when genuinely dissatisfied with the script.
The ongoing dispute highlights issues of creative differences and communication breakdowns during Jinn’s production, resulting in a public clash between the parties involved. Despite the controversy, the film has now entered the public domain, and audiences will judge its merit independently.
