A biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, hailed as the father of Indian cinema, has sparked controversy with two high-profile projects currently in development. One version is being helmed by acclaimed director SS Rajamouli, reportedly with NTR in the lead role. The other is said to be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with Aamir Khan playing the iconic filmmaker.
Adding fuel to the fire, Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson, Chandrasekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, has publicly voiced his disapproval of Rajamouli’s approach while endorsing Hirani’s version. He criticized Rajamouli for not reaching out to the family for inputs, while praising Hirani’s team for their transparency and dedication.
“If someone is making a film on Phalke ji, the least they could do is consult the family,” Pusalkar said in a recent statement. “Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are treating the subject with sensitivity and sincerity. Hirani’s assistant producer, Hindukush Bhardwaj, has been in regular contact with me for the last three years, collecting detailed information and visiting us often.”
Pusalkar further added, “I would be very happy to see Aamir Khan in the role of Phalke ji. He brings honesty and commitment to every character. With Hirani directing, I’m confident it will be a respectful and compelling portrayal.”
The Hirani-Aamir Khan project is expected to go on floors in October 2025, while Rajamouli’s version is still in the planning stages, with no official updates on its production timeline.
As the two biopics head in different directions, the debate over creative rights and authenticity continues to intensify, placing a spotlight on how historical figures are portrayed on screen—and who gets to tell their stories.
