Death During Religious Festivals Inevitable

We were shocked over the death of some 20 or more pilgrims in the Maha Kumbh Mela and injuries to more than a score. It is claimed that there was sudden rush which caused some iron piece to break, etc. That only explains what was the proximate cause of the accident. It does not talk of why such a sudden rush was allowed to build up.

We have been assured several times that all care has been taken to ensure that no untoward things happen and that several thousands of police personnel have been drafted and they would ensure that everything would proceed smoothly without a hitch. But the result is there for all to see. There are still several days to go for the Mela to end and one keeps the fingers crossed.

Promptly relief of Rs 1 lakh has been sanctioned to be handed over to the families oof each of the victims. An enquiry committee would perhaps be appointed which would come up with measures to prevent recurrence of such mishaps, the Govt would announce that the recommendations would be implemented very sincerely, and promptly the report would be consigned to the honourable waste paper basket. Several similar accidents occurred during religious festivals in the past but no lessons have been learnt .
