Mohanlal’s Vrusshabha Ends as 2025’s Biggest Box-Office Disaster

A look at the 2025 box-office scoreboard reveals a year of extremes. On one hand, blockbuster successes such as Dhurandhar, Kantara Chapter 1, Saiyaara, Chhaava, and Lokah: Chapter One shattered expectations and rewrote industry records. On the other, the year also exposed a harsh reality—over 80% of Indian films released in 2025 failed to find commercial success, with several ending in historic losses.

The most devastating box-office failure of the year recorded an astonishing 97% loss and was pulled out of theatres in less than a week, despite starring a superstar at the peak of his career. That film was Vrusshabha, a Malayalam epic drama that released during the Christmas season.

Headlined by Mohanlal, Vrusshabha was projected as one of the most ambitious ventures in the history of Malayalam cinema. Expectations were sky-high, especially since Mohanlal came into the film riding the unprecedented success of L2: Empuraan, which went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.

However, the ground reality turned out to be brutally different. Vrusshabha opened to a poor ₹60 lakh net in India on Day 1, with negligible overseas collections. The film saw further drops on Day 2 and failed to show any recovery even over the weekend.

With even Mohanlal’s formidable star power unable to pull audiences, several theatres across Kerala began cutting their losses. By Tuesday, the film was removed from many screens, failing to complete even a full week in cinemas. It is now expected to conclude its theatrical run with minimal additional revenue.

Written and directed by Nanda Kishore, Vrusshabha features Mohanlal in a dual role across two timelines—as a medieval king and a modern-day businessman. The ensemble cast includes Samarjit Lankesh, Nayan Sarika, Ragini Dwivedi, Ajay, and Neha Saxena. The film released on December 25 in Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada.

Despite its grand scale, multi-language release, and marquee star, Vrusshabha stands as a stark reminder that in today’s market, even the biggest names cannot guarantee box-office success.
