Dhanush Criticizes AI-Altered Climax in Raanjhanaa Re-Release

Following director Aanand L Rai’s strong disapproval, actor Dhanush has now voiced his disappointment over the AI-modified climax in the re-released version of the 2013 cult classic Raanjhanaa (released as Ambikapathy in Tamil).

In the AI-altered version, Dhanush’s character Kundan, who originally dies in the climax, is shown surviving—completely changing the emotional core of the narrative. This change has sparked outrage from the film’s original creative team.

Taking to social media on Sunday, Dhanush shared a strongly worded statement titled “For the Love of Cinema”, condemning the move.

“The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection.”

He further stated:

“This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.”

Dhanush’s comments follow the re-release being promoted by Eros Media World—the film’s original producer—as a “creative reimagining.” However, critics and fans alike argue that such use of AI undermines the original artistic vision and sets a dangerous precedent for the film industry.

The backlash adds to the growing discourse around the ethics of AI in cinema, with many industry insiders calling for clear regulations to protect filmmakers’ creative rights and the authenticity of their work.
