Star kid Dhruv Vikram, son of versatile actor Vikram, has been steadily working to carve his own identity in the film industry while living up to his father’s legacy. He made his on-screen debut five years ago with the Tamil remake of the Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy, earning praise for his performance. Later, he collaborated with his father on Mahaan, which premiered directly on an OTT platform.
In a recent interview ahead of his upcoming release Bison, Dhruv expressed his disappointment over Mahaan’s direct-to-OTT release. He feels that the efforts put in by both him and Vikram were somewhat undercut by the lack of a theatrical release. Dhruv also revealed that working with his father on the film was a joyful experience, though the contrasting roles created a certain professional distance between them.
Directed by acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, Mahaan began production in 2020 but faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually releasing on OTT in February 2022. The film garnered critical acclaim, particularly for the performances of Vikram and Bobby Simha, while Dhruv’s performance was also well received. Many believe that a theatrical release could have brought even more recognition to Dhruv, enhanced his star image, and benefited the makers commercially. While some fans argue that Mahaan could have been a box-office hit, others feel the OTT release helped producers recover their investment.
Currently, Dhruv is busy promoting his Diwali release Bison, directed by Mari Selvaraj, as he continues to establish himself as a rising star in Tamil cinema.
