Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh is facing backlash on social media for casting Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3. The controversy comes in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 innocent people. Following this incident, Indian cultural bodies had banned Pakistani artistes from working in Indian cinema.
Produced by Gunbir Singh Sidhu, Manmord Sidhu, and Diljit Dosanjh under White Hill Studios and Story Time Productions, Sardaar Ji 3 is scheduled for an overseas-only release on June 27 (Friday). The producers have decided to skip the theatrical release in India, and the official trailer has also not been made available on YouTube India. Instead, a message stating “The uploader has not made this video available in your country” is displayed.
When Diljit posted the trailer on his Instagram account, netizens quickly expressed their disapproval of casting Hania Aamir, especially given the current political climate. Hania, along with other Pakistani stars like Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed, and Ali Zafar, recently had their Instagram accounts blocked in India due to legal action prompted by the Pahalgam attack. Hania further faced criticism after making remarks about Operation Sindoor, which many deemed inappropriate.
In response to the controversy, the makers of Sardaar Ji 3 defended their decision, stating that Hania was cast before the recent escalation of tensions and that they opted for an overseas release out of respect for Indian sentiments. The Diljit-Hania starrer will now be released exclusively outside India due to the ongoing situation.
