Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman made weird statements in Parliament that she doesn’t eat onions much. Nationwide the prices of onions have gone up like never before and in cities like Hyderabad and Kolkata, one kilo of onion is being sold at Rs 150.
On this issue, the oppositions questioned the government in controlling the prices. Responding to it, Nirmala said, “I came from a family which consumes fewer onions. In case of me, I don’t eat much of onions and ginger.” These statements invited flak from the oppositions. To pacify them, Nirmala further said, the government is planning to import more and export less of onions and that way we can curb the rising prices.
Before the finance minister, NCP MP Supriya Sule addressed the Lok Sabha and expressed concern over the onion prices in country. However, she said, like rice and wheat farmers, onions farmers should also be assisted by the government. With the inadequate measures and unable to tolerate the high prices, people are robbing onions which is first of its kind in the country.
