In a crucial meeting held in Cairo on Sunday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and President of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) Ronald S. Lauder engaged in discussions focused on restoring stability in the Middle East.
Al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s longstanding position that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains the only viable solution for achieving lasting peace in the region. He emphasized the importance of launching a comprehensive reconstruction effort for the Gaza Strip, stressing that any attempt to forcibly displace its residents would be firmly rejected.
As part of Egypt’s broader strategy, al-Sisi confirmed that the country is currently developing a comprehensive plan aimed at addressing both the immediate and long-term needs of Gaza’s reconstruction. This initiative underscores Egypt’s pivotal role in shaping the future of the region and its commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause.
Lauder, in his statement following the meeting, expressed support for Egypt’s proposal on Gaza and reiterated the World Jewish Congress’s commitment to fostering peace in the region. He underscored the crucial role of Egyptian-American relations in ensuring regional stability, adding that peace through a two-state solution remains the ultimate hope for the future of both Israelis and Palestinians.
The meeting comes in the wake of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal, which suggested that the United States should assume control of Gaza and that Palestinians should be relocated to neighboring Jordan and Egypt. This plan, however, was met with widespread rejection from Arab nations, including Jordan and Egypt, who firmly oppose any arrangement that involves the displacement of Palestinian people.
Lauder’s remarks reflect a shared commitment to peace and stability, with a clear focus on diplomacy, dialogue, and the long-term goal of a two-state solution as the cornerstone for sustainable peace in the Middle East.
