Pawan Kalyan-Trivikram is probably the only hero-director combo in the Indian film history to have delivered both an Industry Hit (Attarintiki Daredi) and the biggest disaster (Agnyaathavaasi).
Released in 2013, Attarintiki Daredi went to beat the records of Magadheera and emerge the new highest grosser in Tollywood. The family entertainer collected approx. 75 Cr share then. Their first film together – Jalsa was also a decent earner.
So, expectations were naturally high when they teamed up for the third time, after four years. However, shocking everyone, Agnyaathavaasi has become the biggest disaster TFI has ever witnessed. The film has almost completed its theatrical run and reportedly incurred nearly Rs 70 Cr loss to buyers, approx. 55 percent of the total investment.
The highest losses were witnessed in Nizam and Ceded. Pawan, who is called the Nizam Nawab for the kind of following he enjoys in this territory, failed big time with AV as the film recovered only one third (around 10 Cr of the 29 Cr). Two third of the investment was lost by the Ceded distributor as well.
About four months ago, when SPYder became an epic disaster, trade expected that no disaster will come close to it for at least a few years. But, Agnyaathavaasi came in no time. If the distributors don’t learn a lesson, AV record-breaker might also come very soon.
