Authorities in southeastern Australia have issued urgent evacuation orders for communities as bushfires in the Grampians National Park, located in the state of Victoria, continue to intensify. Emergency services have urged approximately 100 residents from four small towns near the southwestern edge of the park to evacuate immediately due to the growing threat of an out-of-control fire.
A warning issued by VicEmergency on Thursday morning highlighted a significant escalation in fire activity overnight, with the blaze spreading in multiple directions along the national park’s western edge. Authorities stressed that evacuating now is the safest option, as conditions are expected to deteriorate, and emergency services may be unable to assist those who choose to remain.
The fire, which began on Monday due to dry lightning, has already expanded to a size of 7,000 hectares. Incident controller Peter Western confirmed that the fire had breached private properties at the western edge of the park despite mild weather conditions. Further concerns have been raised about a second fire burning in the park’s northern areas, with nearby communities advised to monitor evolving conditions and prepare for potential evacuation.
In light of an impending heatwave expected to last from Saturday to Tuesday, firefighting crews are working tirelessly to contain the fires and prevent further spread. Local authorities are urging residents to heed evacuation orders and remain vigilant as the situation continues to evolve.
