What was the difference between Tamils’ rally at Marina beach in Chennai demanding lifting of ban on Jallikattu game and the futile attempt for a rally at Rama Krishna beach in Visakhapatnam on January 26 demanding special category status to Andhra Pradesh?
When Jallikattu rally could become such a big hit attracting the nation-wide attention, why couldn’t the rally for special category status to AP become a success?
These were the questions that have come up for discussion on Friday, hours after the Andhra police foiled the SCS rally at Visakhapatnam.
The answer is simple: there was absolute lack of people’s participation in the Vizag rally and that made all the difference between R K beach and Marina beach.
Though there was overwhelming response from the people to the Vizag rally in the social media, when it came to participation in the rally, they backed out.
While hero-cum-politician Pawan Kalyan confined himself to tweeting while continuing his shooting at Hyderabad, there were hardly any followers of Pawan who could galvanise the crowds in Vizag.
The so-called Tollywood heroes like Ram, Sundeep Kishan, Varun Tej and Sai Dharam Tej, who announced that they would participate in the rally, backed out.
If at all there was any tense atmosphere in Vizag, it was only due to active participation of YSR Congress party workers. They tried their best to make the rally a success, but due to lack of support from common people, they, too, could not achieve anything.
The police could successfully arrest bunches of party workers who came on to the streets here and there without any hassle.
There would have been some momentum had party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy entered the city, but the police successfully prevented him from coming out of the airport.
It clearly showed that unless the issue ignites the people’s emotions, they would not come on to the streets, however hard the opposition parties try.
Had there been an emotional upsurge among the people, Naidu would not have stopped the agitation on the beach irrespective of using thousands of police!
