Actress Fatima Sana Shaikh recently stirred discussions across the South Indian film industry after speaking candidly about her experiences with the casting couch. In a recent interview, the actress revealed that a casting agent once bluntly asked her if she was “ready to do everything” for a film role.
Initially caught off guard, Fatima said she didn’t know how to respond. Later, she tried to steer the conversation by explaining that she was willing to do everything required for the character, in terms of acting and performance. She also admitted that she pretended to be naïve to observe how far the casting agent would go.
Fatima also opened up about certain producers and directors in the South who, while not always direct, do speak about the casting couch in a manner that leaves little to the imagination.
However, the actress has now come forward to clarify that her words were taken out of context. She emphasized that she was referring to a specific incident and not generalizing about the entire South Indian film industry. “It was just one episode,” she explained, “but somehow it was blown out of proportion and misinterpreted as a sweeping comment on the entire industry.”
Fatima further stated that such issues aren’t confined to the film world alone. “Every woman, in some form or the other, faces exploitation. Be it in cinema or any other sector, these experiences unfortunately exist across all demographics,” she concluded.
