Fatima Sana Shaikh Reflects on Success, Directors, and Modern Love

Riding high on the success of Metro In Dino, actress Fatima Sana Shaikh is once again in the spotlight — and loving every minute of it. Reuniting with acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Basu, after their memorable collaboration in Ludo, Fatima is humbled by the opportunity and wonders if she’s become Basu’s “blue-eyed girl.”

In an exclusive chat with Deccan Chronicle, Fatima shares, “I don’t know about being his blue-eyed girl, but I do feel incredibly lucky. Dada has this childlike madness and magic in the way he works. He gives his actors freedom, trusts them deeply, and lets them surprise him. That kind of creative liberty is rare.”

Fatima also drew comparisons between her experiences with Anurag Basu and Nitish Tiwari, with whom she worked on Dangal. “Nitish Sir is structured and patient. We had multiple readings before shoot days, and he liked to prepare thoroughly. He’s also quietly witty. Dada, on the other hand, thrives in organized chaos — he’ll change scenes on the spot and push you to trust the moment. His spontaneity is addictive. Both directors, though very different, believe in honest, heartfelt performances,” she says.

Speaking about her on-screen chemistry with Ali Fazal in Metro In Dino, Fatima explains that much of their connection is expressed in silence. “Dada lets you feel your way through the scene. That’s his brilliance — he doesn’t need to spell everything out.”

On personal beliefs, Fatima offers a thoughtful perspective on relationships and marriage. “I believe in love and deep companionship. But marriage isn’t the only way to define or validate a relationship. For me, it’s about mutual growth, understanding, and freedom. If marriage nurtures that, wonderful. But if it doesn’t, we shouldn’t romanticize it as life’s ultimate goal.”

To Gen Z, living in an era of constant stimulation and pressure, Fatima offers grounded advice: “Slow down. Take a breath. Our culture teaches us the value of balance — between ambition and patience, expression and listening. It’s okay to disconnect and spend time reflecting. Peace doesn’t come from always being in motion — sometimes, it’s found in stillness.”
