Close on the heels of severe allegations of financial irregularities in the National Herald newspaper which was touted as Indian National Congress (INC) mouthpiece, Congress party leaders paralysed parliament. Congress members in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha stormed into the Well no sooner had they met for the day and disrupted both the houses.
Parliament failed to transact any business on Tuesday as Congress members guided by a combative Sonia Gandhi repeatedly disrupted both Houses alleging ‘vendetta politics’, in an apparent reference to the National Herald case. Both the Houses were repeatedly adjourned before the final adjournment minutes past 3 pm as the Congress members were unrelenting on their protest.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court granted on Tuesday temporary relief to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi, saying they would have to personally appear before it on December 19.
If Congress wants to stand vindicate in the National Herald case, it has to prove it in the court but not in parliament.
What’s National Herald Case?
The National Herald newspaper was admittedly a Congress party mouthpiece with Jawaharlal Nehru writing eloquent editorials. All the 5,000 shareholders of Associated Journals Ltd (AJL), the publisher of National Herald, were Congressmen or Congress sympathizers. But in 2008, AJL stopped its publications, including Urdu newspaper Quami Awaz.
It soon turned into real estate with the effortlessly acquired Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Mumbai and Panchkula properties over the years being valued at Rs 5,000 Crore.
Subramanian Swamy has alleged cheating and breach of trust in the acquisition of Associated Journals Limited (AJL) – the publisher of National Herald – by a company called Young India Limited (YIL), in which Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul Gandhi hold 38 percent stake each.
