In a remarkable judgement, High Court of Madras has stated that “age is not criteria for arts, theatre” and made it clear that even girls under minority (less than 18-years age) could act in movies as lead protagonists.
Quashing a petition filed by social activist alleging that ‘minor’ girls should not enter into film industry as there chances for them to be treated ill both mentally, physically and even chances of getting raped, Madras High Court said, “Each one has their own freedom to choose their own career and start working towards it right from childhood. Court could not involve into these matters unless one lodges individual complaint.”
This comes close on the heels of growing examples of minor heroines in filmdom, especially Tamil film industry. Actresses Sandhya, Karthika, Lakshmi Menon, Tulasi are only a few to name who have paused their studies and forayed into films. Petitioner alleged that girls ‘under 18’ acting in films is against to laws related to children and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act but in vain as High Court turned down it saying it can’t be generalized.
