The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Information Technology and Communication (IT&C) department are currently locking horns over the right to provide Wi-Fi services in the city. IT&C is currently providing Free WiFi in a handful of places in Hyderabad as a pilot project.
But all of sudden GHMC announced that it is planning to provide Wi-Fi services to citizens at 200 locations and even allocated 10 Crore for it. IT&C claims that GHMC do not have the right to take up such project and even if it wants to take up, it would need to seek permission from IT&C and the state government.
IT&C claims that there are several stringent norms that should be followed for giving free Wi-Fi since it should not fall in the hands of anti-social elements, GHMC which has not been able to manage its own servers, can not do that on its own.
