Opinion: Tollywood Badly Missing Dasari!
The Telugu film industry, known for its grandeur and scale, is equally characterized by the complex dynamics of power, money, and influence. In this competitive and high-stakes environment, disputes and conflicts are inevitable, often involving bigwigs and influential personalities. Over the years, Tollywood had the good fortune of having a figure like the legendary Dasari Narayana Rao to act as a unifying force, resolving disputes and maintaining harmony within the industry.
Dasari Narayana Rao, a multifaceted personality who excelled as a filmmaker, actor, and politician, was more than just a stalwart of Tollywood. He was a beacon of wisdom, patience, and diplomacy. Whenever conflicts arose—be it financial disagreements, interpersonal clashes, or larger industry-wide issues—Dasari was the go-to mediator. His decades of experience, combined with a deep understanding of human nature and the workings of the industry, allowed him to propose solutions that satisfied all parties involved.
A Calming Presence Amidst Turbulence
Dasari’s passing in 2017 left a void in Tollywood that remains unfilled. The industry’s recent challenges only underscore the absence of a calm and composed “Peddamanishi.” For instance, the Manchu family dispute, which escalated into public altercations and police cases, might have been prevented under Dasari’s guidance. His relationship with the Manchu family, particularly his camaraderie with Mohan Babu, could have helped defuse the situation before it spiraled out of control.
Similarly, the ongoing Pushpa 2 Sandhya Theater controversy, which began with the tragic death of a commoner and escalated into a political firestorm, highlights the need for a mediator with Dasari’s stature. The issue has seen involvement from Telangana’s Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, law enforcement, and even the film’s star, Allu Arjun. Accusations and counter-accusations have marred what could have been an internal resolution. Dasari’s political connections and his reputation as a neutral and respected figure might have helped address the problem at its inception, preventing it from becoming a public spectacle.
The Struggle to Find a Successor
The industry has attempted to fill the void left by Dasari, with prominent figures like Chiranjeevi briefly stepping into the role of a mediator. However, as a mainstream superstar, Chiranjeevi faced challenges in being perceived as unbiased. Fearing allegations of partiality or undue involvement, the Megastar eventually distanced himself from such disputes. This underscores the difficulty of finding someone with Dasari’s unique combination of experience, respect, and neutrality.
A Legacy of Resolution
Dasari’s ability to mediate disputes was legendary. It was often said, “Enter Dasari’s house with any kind of a problem, no matter how big it is, and you will walk out with a pacifying solution.” This legacy of resolution is a stark reminder of what the industry lacks today. Beyond his professional achievements, Dasari’s role as a bridge-builder between filmmakers, actors, producers, and even politicians made him indispensable.
As Tollywood continues to grow, the absence of a “Peddamanishi” like Dasari Narayana Rao is increasingly felt. The industry needs a figure who can rise above personal interests, bring people together, and guide the community toward amicable solutions. Until such a leader emerges, Tollywood will continue to grapple with unresolved disputes and the fallout of power dynamics, yearning for the wisdom and composure that Dasari so effortlessly embodied.
