In a shocking turn of events, celebrity restaurants have found themselves in t
he spotlight for reasons beyond luxurious décor and high-end dining experiences. Gauri Khan, renowned for her impeccable design skills, film production, and her status as Bollywood royalty as Shah Rukh Khan’s wife, is now facing an unexpected challenge—food adulteration allegations.
The controversy began when influencer Sarthak Sachdeva decided to investigate the authenticity of dishes served at celebrity-owned restaurants. Armed with an iodine tincture, he visited several high-profile eateries, including Virat Kohli’s One8 Commune, Shilpa Shetty’s Bastian, Bobby Deol’s Someplace Else, and Gauri Khan’s upscale Pali Hill restaurant, Torii. His mission: to test the authenticity of the paneer.
Things took a dramatic turn when, during the iodine test, the paneer served at Torii allegedly turned black—an indication of starch contamination. The iodine tincture test is a basic method used to check for starch in paneer, and when it turns blue-black, it suggests the presence of starch, which is not typical of authentic, naturally made paneer.
While the internet quickly erupted over the incident, Torii issued a swift response, claiming that the dish in question contained soy-based ingredients, and that the iodine reaction didn’t necessarily mean the food was of poor quality. The restaurant stood by its culinary integrity, although Gauri Khan refrained from commenting publicly on the matter.
This isolated incident has sparked broader discussions about food quality, transparency, and the standards upheld in celebrity-run eateries. Whether this will lead to increased accountability in the glamorous world of fine-dining or be brushed off as a one-time glitch remains to be seen. But for now, the heat in Gauri Khan’s kitchen is certainly rising.
