A priest named Raj who reportedly joined the Mayiladuthurai’s Mayuranathaswami temple service recently to give a helping hand to his father has been expelled because of his strange behaviour and circulating a photo which went viral on WhatsApp.
As per the reports, Raj showed his creativity and decorated the goddess Abhayambal in a north India traditional outfit Salwar Kameez which not surprised the citizens but disappointed them. The devotees are claiming that the sanctity of the 1000-year-old idol is dented because of his weird feats.
On this note, temple manager Ganeshan stated that the authorities have decided to remove both the priest as well as his father from the service. Every Friday, it is their tradition to adorn the goddess idol with sandalwood paste and a saree. As they diverged from their duties and insulted tradition and culture, the manager feels sacking them is correct.
The priest reportedly decorated the idol in pink kameez and blue salwar. However, this is not the first time in Tamil Nadu. Some decorated the deity with new Rs. 2000 notes in Coimbatore district after the demonetization in November 2016.
