Google Expands Audio Overviews in NotebookLM with 50+ Language Support

Google has significantly broadened the accessibility of its AI-powered research and note-taking tool, NotebookLM, by expanding language support for its innovative Audio Overviews feature. With the latest update, the feature now supports more than 50 languages, including Indian languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Maithili, Konkani, and Urdu.

Originally launched in late 2024, Audio Overviews are designed to simplify complex or technical information by transforming written content into natural, podcast-style audio summaries. Rather than simply reading text aloud, the tool uses two AI-generated voices to engage in a conversational dialogue, offering a more intuitive and digestible way to understand dense materials.

The enhancement is powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, which includes native audio capabilities and multilingual processing. Users can now select their preferred “Output Language” directly from NotebookLM’s settings. Both audio summaries and chatbot responses will be delivered in the chosen language, with the flexibility to switch languages as needed.

This expanded functionality is particularly valuable in multilingual environments, such as international classrooms or collaborative study groups. Google notes that educators can now use course materials in various languages—like Portuguese, Spanish, and English—and create unified audio summaries in the language most comfortable for students.

The Audio Overviews feature is available to the public through the NotebookLM platform. Users can upload content via Google Drive, paste links, or enter text manually. Once the material is uploaded, generating an Audio Overview is as simple as selecting the appropriate option.

Google has emphasized its commitment to refining the experience, noting that continued development will be guided by user feedback.
