Kingdom, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, hit theatres on Thursday, marking a significant step into the world of large-scale cinematic storytelling for the filmmaker known for Jersey and Malli Raava. Notably absent from the film’s promotions, Gowtam has now begun engaging with the media following the film’s release, offering insights into the future of the Kingdom franchise.
Conceived as a two-part narrative from the outset, Kingdom concludes with the introduction of a mysterious new character—Sethu—who is revealed to be the elder brother of the film’s primary antagonist. Gowtam has confirmed that Kingdom Part 2 will revolve around the intense conflict between Suri (played by Vijay Deverakonda) and Sethu. However, before diving into the sequel, the director plans to develop a standalone OTT prequel centred on Sethu’s character.
According to Gowtam, several subplots were trimmed or restructured during the editing of Part 1. The proposed OTT film aims to bridge these narrative gaps and offer audiences a deeper understanding of Sethu before he becomes a central figure in the sequel. Producer Naga Vamsi has teased that a well-known star has been cast as Sethu, although an official announcement is still awaited.
In a separate post-release interaction, lead actor Vijay Deverakonda hinted at even more ambitious plans. Early discussions are underway for a potential Kingdom Part 3—a prequel set in the 1920s that would explore the origins of the Kingdom itself. While this third installment remains in the conceptual phase, the team’s intent to expand the cinematic universe is clear.
While Kingdom has so far garnered mixed responses from audiences and critics, the strategic move to introduce an OTT prequel could prove vital in building out its world organically and maintaining narrative momentum.
In the meantime, Gowtam Tinnanuri has completed work on Magic, a musical drama slated to be his next theatrical release. He also intends to wrap up a romantic film before resuming work on Kingdom Part 2, once Vijay Deverakonda becomes available after completing his ongoing projects.
With its evolving structure and layered storytelling, the Kingdom universe seems poised to grow well beyond a conventional two-part saga.
