Securing an H1B work visa to the United States has become increasingly challenging for Indian professionals, as mounting backlogs at US consulates and tighter immigration scrutiny continue to delay visa processing.
Applicants and immigration consultants report that H1B visa interview appointments across India are facing severe postponements. Interview slots that were initially scheduled for December 2025 have been repeatedly rescheduled — first to March 2026, then to October 2026, and now pushed further into 2027. As a result, no fresh H1B visa interview appointments are currently available in India for the entire year of 2026.
The prolonged delays have left thousands of Indian professionals in limbo. Many candidates who have already secured job offers from US employers are unable to proceed with their employment plans, while existing appointments continue to be deferred without clear timelines. Newly released slots, according to applicants, are being allocated only for the latter half of 2027, intensifying uncertainty.
The situation follows recent remarks by former US President Donald Trump, who proposed a steep $100,000 fee for H1B visas and warned American companies against excessive reliance on foreign workers. These statements have triggered concerns of renewed restrictions on work-based immigration, particularly for Indian professionals who form a significant portion of the H1B workforce.
Immigration experts believe the extended delays may reflect a broader policy approach aimed at slowing down employment-based visa approvals. For affected professionals, the uncertainty has resulted in stalled careers, financial stress, and growing anxiety over future opportunities in the United States.
