Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Trailer: Varun & Janhvi’s Make-or-Break Rom-Com

While South Indian cinema continues to experiment with diverse genres and pan-India subjects, Bollywood still appears to be stuck in the tried-and-tested romantic comedy format. Except for Chhavaa and Saiyaara, the Hindi film industry has struggled to deliver notable hits this year. Now, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s upcoming film Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari looks set to follow the familiar rom-com formula.

Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions, the film also stars Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf in pivotal roles. Slated for a worldwide release on October 2, the trailer was unveiled today, giving audiences a glimpse into its lighthearted narrative.

The trailer introduces Sunny (Varun Dhawan) and Tulsi Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor), who are left heartbroken after their exes — Ananya (Sanya Malhotra) and Vikram (Rohit Saraf) — break up with them and decide to marry each other. Determined to sabotage the wedding, Sunny and Tulsi hatch a plan to fake a relationship, leading to chaos, comedy, and plenty of dramatic twists. On the surface, the film comes across as a classic Bollywood rom-com template, raising the question of whether today’s audiences are still interested in this genre.

For both Varun and Janhvi, the film carries high stakes. Varun has not delivered a box-office success since Bhediya in 2022, while Janhvi is yet to score a solo theatrical hit, with Devara being her only commercial success — and that too outside Bollywood. Whether Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari can turn their fortunes around and strike a chord with audiences remains to be seen.
