Rajpal Yadav Surrenders at Tihar Jail in Cheque-Bounce Case

Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before the Tihar Jail authorities at 4 pm on Thursday after the Delhi High Court declined to grant him any further relief in connection with multiple cheque-bounce cases filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd. On Wednesday, the actor had sought an extension of the deadline to surrender, but the High Court refused to entertain his plea.
During the proceedings, Yadav’s counsel informed the court that the actor had managed to arrange ₹50 lakh and requested one more week to clear the remaining dues. However, it was noted that an amount of ₹9 crore is still payable to the complainant.
The case dates back to 2018, when a Delhi magisterial court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife in several cheque-bounce cases following a complaint by the financier. The court sentenced the actor to six months’ imprisonment, a verdict that was upheld by a sessions court in 2019. Yadav subsequently challenged the conviction in the Delhi High Court.
Yadav’s counsel argued that the financial distress arose after a film produced using funds borrowed from the complainant failed at the box office. In June 2024, the Delhi High Court had temporarily suspended Yadav’s conviction, urging him to take “sincere and genuine measures” to resolve the matter amicably with the complainant.
However, on February 2, the High Court refused to grant any further extension, observing that Yadav had repeatedly breached his undertakings to repay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him. The court also directed that the amount already deposited with the Registrar General of the High Court be released to the complainant.
So far, Yadav has deposited two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh each with the Registrar General. With no further relief granted, the actor surrendered as directed by the court.
