Hyderabad: YSRCP leader Y.S.Sharmila on Tuesday kickstarted party’s campaign for GHMC elections. She said, if today Hyderabad was being recognised as a Metropolitan city, it was because of the meticulous planning and vision of late Chief Minister Y.S.Rajashekar Reddy, who took several initiatives during his five-year rule to transform Hyderabad into a global city.

“If it was not for YSR, Hyderabad would have remained just a municipality. When YSR took over in 2004, Hyderabad was a mere municipality. He upgraded Hyderabad into a Metropolitan City by setting up HMDA and extending city limits to four neighbouring districts covering Ranga Reddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda. He built world-class Shamshabad international airport, Outer Ring Road and PVNR Express Highway, due to which Hyderabad attained global image.”

Sharmila said without international airport, ORR and PVNR Express highway, Hyderabad would not be as what it is today. “Even the Hyderabad Metro Rail project was conceived by YSR. Had he been alive, Metro Rail would have been completed long back and people in city would not have faced the worst traffic problems that they encounter now,” Sharmila added. She lashed at subsequent Congress and TRS government for failing to take up a single noteworthy project to put Hyderabad on global map.

Sharmila said the subsequent governments failed to complete even the drinking water projects launched by YSR to bring Godavari, Krishna river water to city and the result is severe water crisis being faced by people of Hyderabad now. “The Godavari and Krishna water piplelines were laid by YSR and they still remain incomplete. But some leaders these days are posing for photographs by washing their face with Krishna, Godavari water and trying to fool the public as if they had taken up these projects,” Sharmila remarked.
