Hydra Operation Expands with New Police Station in Hyderabad

The “Hydra” operation, which has significantly impacted Telangana politics and the lives of its residents, has taken multiple twists and turns since its inception.

Led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the government’s main objective was to transform Hyderabad into a cleaner, greener city by clearing encroachments along the Musi River. The operation, launched in June of the previous year, gained momentum a month later, resulting in the demolition of several prominent properties, including an event center owned by actor Akkineni Nagarjuna. The operation also targeted the homes of several poor families, leading to widespread criticism and allegations.

Despite facing backlash, CM Revanth Reddy remained firm in his stance, and further powers were granted to the operation. The “GHMC Act of 1955” was amended, adding Section 374-B to empower the government to establish officials or agencies tasked with protecting lakes and properties. This amendment significantly strengthened Hydra’s authority. After a brief pause, Hydra resumed its work, with Hydra Commissioner Ranganath announcing that certain limits would be set to curb unauthorized demolitions.

In a recent development, the government has decided to establish a dedicated police station for Hydra. An official order was issued on Tuesday morning, specifying that the police station will be located in the B Block of the Buddha Bhavan in Hyderabad. This marks the first time that Hydra will have its own police station, which will operate 24/7.

The new station will not only accept complaints related to encroachments but also provide a platform for the public to voice their concerns. While it will function similarly to a regular police station, it will possess special powers to handle issues related to the Hydra operation, as outlined in the official order.
