IBM has announced a major commitment to equip five million people across India with critical digital skills by the end of the decade, as part of its global goal to skill 30 million individuals worldwide by 2030.

The initiative will be delivered through IBM SkillsBuild, the company’s free digital education platform that offers more than 1,000 courses. The programme focuses on high-growth and future-ready domains such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and quantum computing, aiming to prepare India’s workforce for a rapidly evolving economic and technological landscape.

Moving beyond basic digital literacy, IBM’s latest effort seeks to democratise access to advanced and frontier technologies. By building deep technical fluency, the company aims to ensure that students and working professionals are equipped for the jobs of tomorrow.

“India possesses the talent and ambition to lead the world in AI and Quantum,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of IBM. “Fluency in frontier technologies will define economic competitiveness, scientific progress and societal transformation. Our commitment to skill five million people is an investment in that future.”

To achieve the ambitious scale, IBM plans to expand its presence across schools, universities, and vocational training centres throughout the country. A key pillar of this strategy is its collaboration with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Under the partnership, IBM will work with educational institutions to integrate specialised curricula into existing courses, organise hackathons, and offer internship opportunities. The focus is on creating hands-on learning pathways that bridge the gap between classroom education and industry requirements.

A significant component of the initiative is centred on training educators. IBM is co-developing AI curricula for senior secondary students and rolling out faculty enablement programmes to ensure teachers are well-equipped to deliver advanced technical education at scale.

Through this initiative, IBM aims to strengthen India’s digital talent pipeline and support the country’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in next-generation technologies.
