India-China Direct Flights Resume After Years

Direct air connectivity between India and China is gradually being restored, marking a significant step toward resuming travel after years of disruption. The Chinese Embassy in India announced that Air China has resumed direct flights between Beijing and Delhi. A spokesperson, Yu Jing, emphasized the broader significance, stating that the resumption is more than just about travel — it represents trade, tourism, trust, and a green light for SCO and BRICS people-to-people cooperation.

Flights between the two countries had been suspended for over four years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Galwan Valley clash in 2020. Services began gradually returning in late 2025, with routes such as Kolkata–Guangzhou and Shanghai–Delhi restarting operations. With connectivity improving, interest among Indian travellers planning trips to China is rising once again.

China offers multiple visa categories depending on the purpose of travel. For tourism, most Indian travellers opt for the L visa, while other categories include M visa for business, Z visa for employment, X1 and X2 visas for students, F visa for cultural exchanges or study tours, S1 and S2 or Q1 and Q2 visas for family visits, J1 and J2 for journalists, and R visa for high-level professionals. Applicants need to prepare a comprehensive set of documents including a valid passport with at least six months’ validity and two blank pages, a completed visa application form, recent passport-sized photographs, a cover letter with travel details, confirmed hotel bookings and return flight tickets, a detailed travel plan, proof of financial means (bank statements showing approximately ₹1,00,000), income tax returns, salary slips, a leave letter from the employer, and an invitation letter if applicable.

The visa application process involves both online and in-person steps. Applicants must fill out the form on the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) website, print and sign it, attach all required documents, submit the application in person at the nearest visa centre, pay the applicable fee, and collect the passport on the assigned date. A pick-up slip is provided after submission, which is necessary to collect the processed visa. Visa fees vary depending on the type and duration of the visa, so applicants are advised to check the CVASC website or the Chinese Embassy for the latest details.

With the resumption of direct flights, travel and tourism between India and China is expected to see a substantial revival, benefiting both countries’ people-to-people exchanges and business ties.
