New Delhi, March 4 (IANS) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his heartfelt congratulations to Christian Stocker on his swearing-in as Austria’s new Federal Chancellor. PM Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Austria in the years ahead.

Christian Stocker officially assumed office after taking the oath at the Hofburg on Monday, bringing an end to Austria’s prolonged political uncertainty. Stocker’s appointment follows the formation of a coalition government comprising the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), the Social Democrats, and the liberal Neos party, signaling a new chapter in Austrian politics despite the challenges of coalition negotiations.

Taking to social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his optimism about the future of India-Austria relations, stating, “Warmly congratulate Christian Stocker on being sworn in as the Federal Chancellor of Austria. The India-Austria Enhanced Partnership is poised to make steady progress in the years to come.” He further emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, adding, “I look forward to working with you to take our mutually beneficial cooperation to unprecedented heights.”

India and Austria share a longstanding diplomatic relationship, having established official ties in 1949. The two nations commemorated 70 years of bilateral relations in 2019, underscoring decades of mutual cooperation and shared interests. Over the years, both countries have engaged in high-level diplomatic exchanges, fostering economic and strategic partnerships.

In September 2021, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited Vienna to participate in the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, reinforcing parliamentary cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, in February 2019, Austria’s then-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karin Kneissl, visited India to celebrate the milestone anniversary of diplomatic relations, holding discussions with her Indian counterpart, the late Sushma Swaraj.

With Chancellor Stocker now leading Austria, the diplomatic and economic ties between India and Austria are expected to witness further strengthening. Both nations continue to collaborate across various sectors, including trade, technology, and global policy matters, reinforcing their shared commitment to international cooperation and development.
