In a transformative move to modernise India’s travel documentation infrastructure, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officially launched the e-passport initiative on April 1, 2024, as part of the enhanced Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0. This pilot programme represents a significant step forward in strengthening passport security, improving the efficiency of international travel, and protecting citizens’ personal data from fraud or tampering.
What is an e-Passport?
An e-passport is a next-generation travel document that integrates Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It features an embedded electronic chip and antenna within the passport’s cover. This chip securely stores the passport holder’s personal details and biometric information, enabling seamless and reliable verification at immigration checkpoints worldwide.
A key visual identifier of an e-passport is a small gold symbol located on the passport’s front cover, indicating the presence of the electronic chip.
Key Benefits of e-Passports
Enhanced Security:
The chip is digitally signed and encrypted using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), greatly reducing the risk of passport forgery, duplication, and identity theft.
Faster Immigration Processing:
The electronic data allows immigration authorities to authenticate the passport swiftly, expediting border control procedures and minimising wait times for travellers.
Improved Data Protection:
Advanced encryption ensures that sensitive biometric and personal data cannot be accessed or altered by unauthorised parties.
Rollout and Availability
As of now, e-passports are being issued in the following 13 cities:
Amritsar
Bhubaneswar
Chennai
Delhi
Goa
Hyderabad
Jaipur
Jammu
Nagpur
Raipur
Ranchi
The MEA has announced plans to expand this service to all Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) across India by mid-2025, in line with its vision of a digitally empowered citizen services framework.
Impact on Existing Passport Holders
Current passport holders are not required to upgrade to an e-passport. Traditional passports will continue to remain valid until their date of expiry. The e-passport is being introduced as an optional upgrade, allowing citizens to adopt the new format at their discretion, particularly during passport renewal or reissuance.
The Road Ahead
The launch of the e-passport marks a critical milestone in India’s ongoing digital transformation. As the programme scales nationwide, it is expected to enhance the global travel experience for Indian citizens, while reinforcing the government’s commitment to secure, technology-driven public services. This initiative places India on par with global standards in passport technology, ensuring greater convenience, safety, and trust in international travel documentation.
