New Delhi: Instagram accounts of several prominent Pakistani celebrities, including actors Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, and Ali Zafar, are no longer accessible in India. Users attempting to view these profiles are met with a message that reads: “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.”
This development follows a series of digital crackdowns initiated by the Indian government. Earlier this week, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recommended the banning of 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for spreading provocative, communally sensitive content and misinformation targeting India, its armed forces, and security agencies. These actions came in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
A government source confirmed, “On the recommendations of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Government of India has banned several Pakistani YouTube channels for disseminating false narratives, provocative content, and anti-India misinformation following the tragic incident in Pahalgam.”
Tensions between the Indian and Pakistani entertainment industries have persisted since 2016, when Pakistani actors were unofficially barred from working in India after the Uri terror attack. Since then, no Pakistani actor has officially appeared in Indian films. Most recently, Fawad Khan’s comeback film Abir Gulaal, co-starring Vaani Kapoor, was denied release in India. Fawad was last seen in the Bollywood film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).
The Indian government’s recent digital restrictions are being viewed as part of a broader, more assertive strategy in response to Pakistan’s continued support of cross-border terrorism.
