The Indian government has formally reached out to U.S. authorities to secure an emergency visa for the family of Neelam Shinde, a student from Maharashtra’s Satara district, who is critically injured and undergoing treatment in an American hospital following a severe road accident.
Shinde’s family has been struggling to obtain a visa to travel to the U.S. to be by her side. The accident occurred on February 14, and while a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, her family was only informed two days later by her roommate. Shinde has suffered serious injuries to her head, hands, legs, and chest, requiring emergency surgery for a critical head injury. The hospital treating her has urged her family to reach the U.S. at the earliest.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the recent passing of Shinde’s mother, leaving her father, Tanaji Shinde, in an extremely distressing position as he struggles to secure the necessary travel documents. The family has sought urgent intervention from the Indian government not only for visa assistance but also for any necessary medical support.
Despite approaching several officials, including Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, former MP Shriniwas Patil, and former MLA Balasaheb Patil, the family initially received no government assistance. However, political leaders have since stepped in, with NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule urging External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene.
Taking to social media, Sule tagged Jaishankar and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), highlighting the urgency of the situation and requesting expedited processing of Tanaji Shinde’s U.S. visa application.
The Indian government has now formally reached out to the U.S. authorities, and efforts are underway to facilitate the family’s travel. The case continues to draw widespread attention, with many calling for swift action to ensure that Shinde’s family can be by her side during this critical time.
