External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday thanked South Korea for its strong expression of solidarity following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In a phone conversation with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Taeyul, Jaishankar conveyed gratitude for the Republic of Korea’s support and reiterated India’s commitment to fighting terrorism in all its forms. “Spoke with Foreign Minister Cho Taeyul of South Korea this morning. Thanked him for ROK’s support and solidarity in light of the Pahalgam terror attack. Underlined the need to combat terrorism in all forms and manifestations,” the minister posted on X.
The terror attack, which occurred on April 22 in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists and left several others critically injured. Four heavily armed terrorists—two of whom were Pakistani nationals—emerged from dense forests and indiscriminately opened fire on civilians. In an earlier statement, South Korea condemned the attack and expressed deep concern. Its foreign ministry extended condolences to the victims and reaffirmed its firm stance that terrorism is unacceptable under any circumstances.
In response to the attack, the Indian government, during a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 23, announced a series of countermeasures against Pakistan. These include suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, closure of the Attari border crossing, cancellation of all visas issued to Pakistani nationals, blocking of Pakistani YouTube channels and X handles, and downgrading diplomatic relations by reducing embassy staff. These measures underline India’s resolve to take strong action against cross-border terrorism and hold those responsible accountable.
